Chapter 488 Werewolf?
Chapter 488 Werewolf?
"Something's wrong with the sky! It's a blood moon!" Olaf then noticed that the full moon in the sky was a chilling blood red.
"Damn it! Calm the soldiers! Everyone, form a circle!" Apophis Breo's expression changed drastically as if he had remembered something, and he suddenly shouted.
"All knights, blend into the ranks of the valiant warriors! Switch to your lances! This time, the enemy might need someone with long reach!" A few beads of cold sweat trickled down Apophis Breo's forehead.
"What's wrong, sir?" The great knight walked over, dragging his sword.
"Put on your lance! Be careful, it might be werewolves!" Apophis Breo spat, cursing under his breath.
"Werewolves? Shouldn't those creatures be extinct?" The Grand Knight of King's Landing was stunned and didn't react for a long time.
"By the Dragon God! Dragonhawks have been extinct for so many years, but aren't there still some among the dwarves?" Apophis Breo shrugged and said indifferently, clearly not surprised by anything that appeared on his face now.
"Attention all soldiers! Stay alert! The intruders are hostile! Attack immediately if anything happens!" Apophis Breo's eyes were grave.
He could already smell the faint, fishy stench in the air. A full moon and a blood moon had both come together... Apophis Breo grinned self-deprecatingly. Well, he was really lucky. He could encounter anything!
“We don’t have silver weapons!” Olaf growled in a low voice to Apophis Breo. Their halberds were made of Star Silver Steel, and they didn’t have mithril weapons. While werewolves didn’t have strong ranged attack power, their 100% professional birth rate, powerful melee combat, and regenerative abilities were enough to crush them.
"Hopefully not too much." Apophis Breo's face darkened. He had already hung the bottle of dragon blood in the most convenient place. If there was really no way out, he wouldn't mind pouring the dragon blood on himself.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh~" A group of people leaned against the campfire, forming a circle in the cold wind, watching the surrounding movements warily. Although the simple barricades could not withstand the attack, they still gave everyone some psychological comfort.
"Are we just going to stand here like this?" After waiting for a long time, Olaf looked up at the blood moon in the sky and said somewhat impatiently.
"Send 10 soldiers to pack up our camp!" Apophis Breo ordered.
"Puff puff!" The horses snorted uneasily, clearly startled by something.
"Looks like we won't be getting a good night's sleep tonight." Apophis Breo frowned. With a suspected werewolf lurking outside, how could they possibly get any sleep?
"My lord, are you sure it's a werewolf?" Olaf asked with some doubt, after all, it could be other magical beasts, and what if Apophis Breo was wrong?
“This forest is steeped in werewolf legends, so it’s not surprising that there are werewolves here. There aren’t many creatures as active as this in this kind of weather!” Apophis Breo shook off the dozens of snowflakes that had fallen on him.
“No, it’s still early before dawn, everyone needs to rest.” The Grand Knight looked worriedly at the soldiers who were on edge and whispered to Apophis Breo.
"Tsk!" Apophis Breo frowned, just about to say something.
"Ouch~"
"Ouch~"
"Damn it!" Apophis Breo gritted his teeth and managed to utter a single word. It was confirmed; he had really encountered a werewolf. Apophis Breo vowed to go back and try his luck at the casino! He was just too damn "lucky."
“Werewolves…” The soldiers looked around in panic, some even brandishing their halberds for reassurance. “Quiet! You are the most elite warriors of the North! Are you scared by mere werewolves?” Apophis Breo said, feigning composure and displeasure.
"..." After exchanging glances, the group calmed down upon seeing Apophis Breo's composed expression. After all, they felt more confident when their leader wasn't worried. Little did they know that Apophis Breo's back was already soaked with cold sweat.
"My lord, I suggest we arrange for some of our men to rest. The werewolves won't attempt a second attack in the same place after the failed night raid," the Grand Knight said, looking at the soldiers who were already yawning with exhaustion.
“But werewolves are the most patient; they will chase their prey for a very long time…” Apophis Breo said calmly.
"We need to leave some men on guard, otherwise we'll be finished during the day!" the Grand Knight advised. After all, they needed to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances during the day, but these werewolves were indeed troublesome. They had inherited the patience of wolves, and they might track them to the edge of the Dark Forest.
"Divide everyone into three groups! One group to sleep, one group to warm themselves by the fire and be ready to replace the guards at any time, and one group to stand guard!" Apophis Breo looked at his troops.
“Alright!” The Grand Knight nodded knowingly.
Soon, the seventy-odd men, using tent cloths as makeshift mats and blankets wrapped around themselves, drifted off to sleep in the open air, relying on their warhorses or sleds as a backdrop. Apophis Breo's eyes showed a hint of heartache; the soldiers' harsh conditions made him frown, and in the end, he could only sigh helplessly. After all, setting up tents was a waste of time, energy, and manpower, so they had no choice but to make do with camping in the open air. At least a few campfires could help them ward off the cold and darkness.
"Sir, why don't you take a rest?" Olaf was preparing to have a simple hut prepared for Apophis Breo so that he could rest.
"No need, I'll stay with everyone. Just remember to call me when you need me to replace you!" Apophis Breo patted Olaf and the Grand Knight and whispered his instructions.
Apophis Breo then lay down on a sled piled with bundles of tent fabric and covered himself with a blanket so that he wouldn't be woken by the cold north wind.
……
"Your Highness, I'm back!" Caslo leisurely returned to Swiftstream City, and then went to the lord's castle to meet Roland.
"How is that kid doing?" Roland asked with concern. After all, he was one of his people, and he couldn't just leave hundreds of people out there without knowing why.
"Things are alright, apart from encountering some Dark Spiders, we haven't encountered any danger!" Caslo took a pastry from Roland's table.
"Hmm! Your Highness's cooking is excellent! I hope my future wife will be just as virtuous!" Caslo gave Nyx a thumbs-up in praise.
“Looks like I’ll have to have a word with Ajax.” Roland rolled his eyes at Caslo, while subtly making a threat.
"Stop! Otherwise you'll be kneeling on the floor again when we get back." Caslo shook his head like a rattle.
"Alright, I'll stop teasing you! You're so easily amused. Since Apophis Breo is fine, you can arrange your own time." Roland waved his hand.
Caslo nodded and said goodbye to Roland. Little did Caslo know that if he had stayed another night, he would have discovered that Apophis Breo was in serious trouble. However, now everything depended on Apophis Breo's own efforts to resolve.
