Devouring World Dragon
Chapter 43 Fenrir the Dire Wolf
Chapter 43 Fenrir the Dire Wolf
Time flies like an arrow, and the days pass like a shuttle. Spring, autumn, and winter come and go, and another season cycles. The world never stops turning because of the disappearance of any being.
The giant serpent, firmly suppressed beneath the sea by its own chains, could do nothing. Neither the chains nor the heavy ocean pressing down on it made it able to move at all. Right beside it was the old sea god Egil, who was watching its every move.
The entire ocean is a prison, and the old sea god Egil is its guardian.
The old sea god Egil clearly had no doubt about being the guardian of the giant serpent. On the contrary, he would take advantage of his occasional patrols of the sea to check from time to time to see if the behemoth was trying to break free.
The ferocious nature and immense power displayed by this monster, its aura that seemed capable of overturning the sea, truly made the old sea god greatly wary... even fearful.
It was precisely because Egil was so concerned about the serpent that he would come to check on it every day at first. It wasn't until two or three years later, when he saw that the serpent was indeed not making any rash moves, that he reduced the number of times he came to check on it, but he would still come to check on it two or three times a week as usual.
Besides, in the sky, whether it was the sun goddess Sur, who had a deep grudge against the serpent, or Mani, the moon god who had shattered most of the moon and could only appear as a crescent, or countless other stars and clouds... all were watching its movements day and night. If there was any unusual activity, they would immediately blow their horns to summon the gods.
From the sea to the sky, though the sky was full of stars, not a single one cast a benevolent glance at the giant serpent; though the clouds in the sky were beautiful, not a single cloud was willing to provide shade for the serpent.
Countless eyes, filled with vigilance, hatred, hostility, fear, and suspicion...
Everyone was watching it.
The world is vast, yet it cannot contain a giant serpent suppressed beneath the sea.
If the serpent hadn't possessed such incredible resilience that even the gods were powerless to kill it, at most imprisoning it beneath the sea, it would likely have long since become a serpent corpse, its soul helplessly sinking to the very bottom of the World Tree, to keep company with the departed gods, the dead giants, and countless other spirits that existed before the world's birth.
The giant serpent was firmly suppressed beneath the sea, and naturally no one would provide it with food. Its innate, intense hunger once again enveloped it.
Whenever it becomes ravenously hungry, the giant serpent howls in agony and struggles desperately, while the chains binding it dig deeper into its flesh and even bones as it struggles violently.
Its flesh and blood were scattered in the sea, attracting countless carnivorous fish to devour it. Faced with these dust particles that it would never have cared about in the past, the giant serpent could only wait in vain for its hunger to gradually subside, for its flesh and scales to slowly heal, until it could resist the devouring of those creatures of different sizes. Then... the hunger would strike again, and everything would repeat itself.
Whenever the giant serpent howls, screams, struggles, and bleeds in agony deep in the ocean, its enormous body can shake the entire seabed, triggering underwater volcanic eruptions, tsunamis on the surface, and even earthquakes of varying intensity on land.
However, the giant snake cannot die.
Neither the endless hunger nor its own injuries could kill this behemoth. Apart from causing this immortal monster to suffer eternal pain, no matter how hungry the monster was, it would not stop its body from growing larger and larger.
For the monster, this did nothing to help it except make it feel even hungrier.
The arrogance that once filled the snake's upright eyes gradually faded with the torment of pain, replaced by a cold, suffocating indifference. However, the ferocity and tyranny of the creature only grew stronger with each passing day. No matter how great the pain, it could not diminish the intense malevolence within the monster.
Life seemed to consist of endless torment and struggle. Until one day…
"Awoooooo!!!!!!!!!!"
From the sky came a fierce and furious wolf howl, the sound resounding through the clouds and reaching the ears of the giant serpent that was sleeping at the bottom of the sea.
Bored, the giant snake raised its head and looked at the blood-red clouds spreading across the sky and the blood-red rain falling on the earth. It instinctively realized: something had happened in the sky.
Much later, the giant serpent learned from the occasional spirits passing by the sea... or rather, from the threat it was made of. In any case, the bewildered serpent then realized what had happened in the sky.
……
After suppressing the giant serpent, the gods thought they were safe and sound, but unexpectedly, a new threat emerged in Asgard...
The serpent's biological elder brother, the demon wolf Fenrir, had grown up.
Initially, of Loki's three siblings, the serpent Jormungandr was so ugly that the gods disliked it and cast it into the endless deep sea; Hela, half-dead, was appointed by Odin as the ruler of the dead, to govern the entire realm of the dead; only the puppy Fenrir, who looked very weak and even cute when he was young, and did not show any ferocity, was kept in Asgard by Odin after much consideration, to see if it could be of any use in the future.
Odin was quite tolerant in this respect; as long as one was capable and not evil, one could live in Asgard.
For example, the sun goddess Shur and her brother Manny, the moon god, were born to a giant, yet they were still given divine status. Loki, needless to say, was born a frost giant and was the nemesis of the gods, yet he was also accepted into the twelve leaders. Another example is the Frey siblings of the Vanir...
Such examples abound. Many of the deities in Asgard were not purely divine in origin, yet they were all valued and not looked down upon because of their origins.
However, things didn't go as planned after Fenrir was left behind.
This young wolf, which was somewhat cute, began to grow rapidly in a short period of time. Although it did not have the enormous size of its brother, its ferocious and cruel demeanor was even more terrifying than that of the giant snake. Its greedy and violent aura made it seem as if it wanted to devour people, which made people tremble with fear when they saw it.
The gods, including Thor, were deeply wary of it, but only Tyr, the fearless and incredibly courageous god of war, dared to feed the wolf.
After the serpent was subdued, this fear grew even stronger, and the gods began to discuss how to deal with the demon wolf, which was gradually becoming uncontrollable.
Suppress by force?
Even Thor, the God of Thunder, shook his head after carefully considering the idea.
That wolf was no less powerful than its brother, and Thor wasn't entirely confident he could subdue it. If a battle were to break out in Asgard, the garden, which had only recently been repaired, would likely be destroyed.
So, after much deliberation, the gods decided to outsmart them.
