Chapter 353, Section 45: Past Events (Part 3)
"Hmm." Chen Ruolan pondered for a moment, "So, it seems that Lao Jin and I have been under your observation all along?"

"Yes," Wen Fengsheng admitted.

Chen Ruolan nodded and said, "That's right, there's no such thing as a free lunch."

"Weapons need to be given to the right people to realize their value," Wen Fengsheng said.

"The Transformation Box was originally intended for Brother Jin, but before he came to District 16, the metallurgical mimicry technology was not yet mature. Later, brainwave control was used instead, and brain control chips could not be implanted remotely. It just so happened that you went back."

Chen Ruolan nodded.

Even Jin Ziyue only had a vague understanding of the secret of the Transformation Box. It wasn't that Chen Ruolan didn't want to tell him, but rather that she was also in the process of figuring it out.

She didn't seem to mind his statement and nodded, saying, "I understand. So, the purpose of providing us with weapons, equipment, and logistical support is..."

“I believe that one day, we will be able to fight side by side,” Wen Fengsheng said calmly, looking at her.

"I don't know why, but big brother, your gaze..." Chen Ruolan couldn't help but laugh, bursting into laughter, "...is so serious..."

Wen Fengsheng smiled.

“That’s not a reason to impress me,” Chen Ruolan said with a smile.

"I know. If life is peaceful and joyful, who would want to solve problems with weapons?" The man remained noncommittal.

“You are different from Brother Jin. He can travel across the ocean and infiltrate enemy territory for the sake of his beloved. His purpose is clear: kill anyone who gets in his way. But what about you?”

Wen Fengsheng raised his eyebrows, his deep phoenix eyes seemingly peering through Chen Ruolan's hidden smile.

"What is the purpose of your presence here? To risk your life for your comrades? Or are you hiding a secret and pretending to fit in?"

His voice was calm, yet it possessed a power to disturb the undercurrents.

Chen Ruolan's smile slowly faded.

Chen Xingtong watched her expression out of the corner of her eye and was surprised to find that she had fallen silent, which was unusual for her.

moment.

Chen Ruolan replied:
"I don't have any grand ambitions. If I really had to choose a goal for myself, it would be 'feeling my heartbeat'."

Chen Xingtong glanced out the window, seemingly indifferent, but her mind was preoccupied with the meaning of "feeling the heartbeat".

Wen Fengsheng smiled wryly: "This has indeed presented us with a difficult problem."

Chen Ruolan chuckled and said, "It's not a big deal. Just be happy and keep things simple."

“Hmm…” the man stroked his chin and said, “Just like ‘whatever,’ these seemingly simple and easy-to-fulfill requests are actually the hardest to satisfy.”

Chen Ruolan waved her hand: "No need for you to trouble yourself."

"I can't meet these abstract conditions, but I do have some more tangible benefits, Miss Chen, would you like to hear them?"

"I'm curious what conditions would make Brother Wen think he could impress me."

Chen Ruolan raised an eyebrow. She sensed that the other party didn't seem to have any ill intentions, so she relaxed a little.

Wen Fengsheng nodded and said, "We can provide a safe place of residence for the people around you."

"There's no absolutely safe place in District 16, and besides, that's not very credible," Chen Ruolan said, glancing at him indifferently.

She knew all too well that this was both protection and constraint.

“It seems Miss Chen doesn’t like this approach, so let’s change the terms.” Wen Fengsheng smiled noncommittally and said nothing more.

He sat down a little closer and said, "Miss Chen, you know Mr. Chen Songhui, right?"

Chen Ruolan froze.

Wen Fengsheng observed her actions and continued, "When Dr. Chen died in District 16, you were only fourteen years old; two years later, Ms. Chen died, and you were sixteen. All these years, you've been in District 16, haven't you? To investigate the cause of Dr. Chen's death?"

Chen Ruolan stared at him, and after three seconds, scratched her head and smiled: "Really, it seems there's nothing that can be hidden from you."

“Actually, we also bear some responsibility for this. Dr. Chen was transferred to District 16 precisely because of us,” Wen Fengsheng said.

After saying this, he keenly sensed a slight change in Chen Ruolan's aura.

Like the hiss of an ancient sword sheath, a cold gleam was drawn from its sheath.

“I need your forgiveness for this matter.” Wen Fengsheng bowed his head in apology. “I’m sorry, it was us who caused you and your daughter to lose the head of the family.”

"And what about my mother?" Chen Ruolan asked calmly.

"For two years, Ms. Chen endured humiliation and secretly investigated the cause of Dr. Chen's death, until she was discovered by the White Walkers of District 16 across the ocean. So they hired Blue Fang, an assassin from the NA organization at the time."

In Chen Ruolan's eyes, the image of Qingya lying on the ground gnawing on a corpse flashed by.

"I see," she replied.

The White Walkers in the alley were originally after her and her mother.

After that, the life trajectory of the survivor was completely rewritten.

It even implicated Yan Wuxun and Douzi.

It turns out that everything was predetermined.

Wen Fengsheng observed her expression and asked, "Are you alright?"

Chen Xingtong behind her clenched her fists silently.

"Anyway, thank you for providing me with the clue." Chen Ruolan's expression returned quickly, and she managed a polite smile.

Wen Fengsheng tentatively asked, "You don't resent us?"

“This was Dad’s own choice, there’s nothing to complain about.” Chen Ruolan didn’t say much, but turned to look at him. “Thank you, but it’s unrealistic to expect me to join you in avenging Dad.”

“You really are, it’s a pity you’re so calm.” Wen Fengsheng sighed, then added, “However, I never said I wanted you to join us, I said we should fight side by side.”

Chen Ruolan smiled apologetically and said:
"Thank you. I can hear Brother Wen's sincerity. He even has connections with my father's generation. I am grateful for your help."

"But this is not a decision I can make alone. More than that, I want to help Lao Jin fulfill his wish and then send them back safely."

"So no matter how much you try to persuade me, it won't help. We still have to see how things go with Lao Jin's negotiations tomorrow."

Wen Fengsheng nodded and said:

"I understand. We've conveyed our sincerity, so we've achieved our goal for today. Now, let Xing Tong show you around the neighborhood for the rest of the time."

"Please rest assured, Ms. Chen, don't worry about what you see. We trust you, just as you trust us."

"Chatting with you really doesn't do me any good at all." Chen Ruolan showed a slightly annoyed expression.

“Likewise,” Wen Fengsheng replied.

After saying that, the man left the room.

Chen Ruolan and Chen Xingtong were left behind, one sitting on the edge of the bed and the other leaning against the window.

……

"It seems my worries were unnecessary," Chen Xingtong said in a low voice. "You're a very clever girl."

Chen Ruolan said shyly, "Hehe, I'm not that good."

She blinked and said, "You're worried about me? Worried about what?"

Chen Xingtong, feeling like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, angrily shouted, "What are you worried about! You idiot!"

Chen Ruolan covered her mouth and chuckled, overjoyed.

Chen Xingtong hesitated for a moment, then put on a nonchalant expression and asked, "How have you been all these years?"

Upon hearing this, Chen Ruolan's smile faded, replaced by a mischievous glint in her eyes: "Want to hear it? How about we trade our daily lives for each other? I want to hear our story too."

"Tch, what a jerk." Chen Xingtong rolled her eyes at her.
