“Of course!” I said smugly. “That’s why I said I agree with your ‘lifeline’ analogy, but the result was different from what you imagined.”

Tong Xiangnan's expression changed slightly. "You've proven it to me. This whole thing wasn't just a simple case of a hero saving a damsel in distress, and there was no coincidence involved. It was all your doing. You wanted to make Zhao Boqing's wife fall for someone else in the shortest amount of time. You succeeded."

“Indeed!” I laughed. “That woman was a so-called lady from a respectable family, a scholarly household. If someone saw her using the toilet, even if they covered for her on the spot, she would most likely still try to kill herself afterwards. In other words, she would be too ashamed to face her husband and family afterwards.”

“Just like you said, you only realize how difficult death is when you’re facing it. Tong Xiangnan waved his hand, signaling me to stop.

He stared at me for a moment, then spoke again, quickly uttering a sentence in English.

"Brilliant!" I laughed heartily.

Tong Xiangnan repeated the sentence, this time in Chinese:
"That woman in the restroom is really hot."

This time, he didn't laugh along with me; instead, he seemed somewhat dejected.

"The two foreign devils were already drunk, and they were used to running rampant in our country at that time. In that situation, if someone nearby said something like that in their native language, it was like giving them a powerful stimulant injection."

I said seriously, "I enjoy dealing with intelligent people."

Tong Xiangnan laughed instead: "Smart people prefer to be friends with fools. For example—Chen Zudao and Zhao Boqing."

I shrugged, neither confirming nor denying.

I nodded approvingly.
