Chapter 153 Map

Chapter 153 Map (Part 1)

On the day I officially became the owner of this house near the burial site, there was a

—Because my adoptive father is remarrying, the runaway child wants to rent my room.

Principles must be upheld;
Life must go on.

So, after agreeing on the rent, Xiao Shen moved directly into the room on the first floor where I had originally lived.

As a positive and motivated person, my rule for myself is to seize every opportunity, no matter when or where.

So, using the excuse of changing rooms and my injured hand making things difficult, after Bai Jing and the others left, I watched as Pi Dan neatly packed up all the broken furniture and clothes from my old room and carried them up to the second floor one by one.

By the time almost everything had been moved up to the master bedroom on the second floor, it was already dark.

As soon as Pidan started walking upstairs, Xiao Shen and I looked up at her and watched her go, while he mischievously whispered to me:

"It's getting late. She's been getting ready all this time, and you haven't lifted a finger. You're planning to leave her here tonight, aren't you?"

"Do you care?"

I glared at him sideways: "Are you in school? I'll give you your rent as tuition and find you a school nearby..."

"Fuck you uncle!"

Xiao Shen cursed, put his hands behind his back, went back into the house, and kicked the door shut without looking back.

Yan Fengwei was probably still grateful for my help last time, so the lunch he prepared was a bit too extravagant.

Not only did we not finish eating at the time, but as darkness fell, Pidan, Xiao Shensan, and I ate Zheluo (leftovers from a banquet are mixed together and called Zheluo) at my house. We ate our fill twice, and Pidan even handed her mother a plastic bag of steamed dumplings and shumai over the wall.

Of course, I have to accompany my mother-in-law on the matter of 'being filial to her'.

But neither Pidan nor I expected that after we handed over the last half of the beggar's chicken, they threw a small cardboard box, only slightly longer than a playing card box and wrapped in plastic, over the wall.

Pidan and I stared at the box on the ground for a full minute.

Finally, I cleverly broke the awkward silence: "These things... I used to blow them up like balloons when I was a kid."

I turned to Pidan and asked, "Do you know how to use them? There are twelve of them!"

After giving me a fierce glare, Pidan took off trying to climb over the wall and run away.

As a result, before she could even get close, I grabbed her by both legs, hoisted her onto my shoulder like a sack of potatoes, and strode into the house.

On the second floor, next to the study, is the master bedroom, where all the sheets and duvet covers have been changed.

I roughly threw someone onto the bed, and was about to do something even rougher when Pidan, who was struggling to sit up, stared blankly at the door.

I initially thought she was being 'sly' or 'embarrassed,' but the more I looked into her eyes, the more something seemed off.

Turning my head, I saw a black, yellow, and white calico cat's head darting into the half-open door.

I couldn't help but scratch my head: "I made a bed for it in my study! It hasn't eaten anything since it came back yesterday..."

"Meow..."

The old cat looked up at me and meowed.

My heart skipped a beat.

Pidan wasn't a veterinarian, but because of the girl's keen observation, she could tell from the cat's meows that it was weak.

"What happened to it?"

Pidan rolled off the bed and rushed to my side.

"Meow!"

The old cat looked up at me, meowed again, slowly turned around, and walked away.

I instinctively grabbed the preserved egg's hand and followed it outside.

The old cat is really too old.

Moreover, in Kou Yun's old house, when Zhang Xuan learned the truth and lost her mind, the old cat named Chou Dan seemed to have its soul also taken away.

Pidan and I both had a premonition of what was going to happen. We watched as the old cat, like a dying old man, hobbled down the stairs, occasionally stumbling and falling over...

We wanted to help it up, to pick it up, but we didn't dare.

And so, we followed the old cat down to the first floor.

The door to the side room creaked open. Xiao Shen was wearing sweatpants and a dark blue T-shirt, but he had a jacket draped over his shoulders like an old man.

He looked at us, then at the old cat, and said in a low voice, "It's time for this little rascal to go."

No one responded to him.

He doesn't need to respond.

Because people of a certain age can sense what is about to happen.

Seeing Xiao Shen pull his feet out of his slippers and step barefoot on the ground.

Pidan and I exchanged a glance and then took off our shoes.

Three barefoot people followed a silent old cat to a corner of the living room.

Seeing the old cat raise its paw, struggling to pry open the birdcage door.

Shen San raised his hand, then withdrew it and said to me, "You do it."

I opened the cage door, and the old cat, still unsteady, shakily crawled inside, slowly turned around, faced me, and meowed.

But then, it did something that none of us expected.

It lay in the birdcage like a mischievous kitten that had just turned one month old, belly up, its four paws constantly lifting upwards, its eyes fixed on me.

This situation lasted for a full minute before Xiao Shen San suddenly said, "There's something else in this cage!"

As he spoke, he reached for the birdcage.

But before he could even put his hand inside the cage, the old cat let out a hoarse hiss and lunged at his hand.

"No, it seems... it seems to only recognize you," Shen San said, arms crossed, still shaken.

The old cat was still lying on its back, still looking at me.

Looking at its eyes, which were beginning to dim, I suddenly realized something.

I reached one hand into the cage and said to Pidan, "Hold the cage down for me."

"Meow..."

The old cat suddenly grabbed my hand with its two bald front paws and licked the back of my hand twice with its tongue.

I looked into its eyes and nodded.

Once it released its front paws, I knelt down on one knee, stretched half of my forearm into the birdcage, spread my fingers, and pressed down on the metal plate at the top of the cage.

Pidan and I exchanged a glance, and Pidan nodded. I then glanced at Old Cat. I felt the texture, placed my palm on it, and pressed firmly on the bulging part in the middle.

There was a "click" sound.

The metal plate embedded in the top of the birdcage was not riveted in place. As I exerted force, it disengaged from the spring clip and fell down.

Along with the metal plate, a piece of leather also fell.

I tried my best to block it.

But my reaction time was still not fast enough.

The metal plate still fell onto the old cat.

That piece of dark yellow leather landed on my wrist.

I quickly lifted the metal plate off the cat.

The old cat was still lying on its back, its eyes still fixed on me.

However, the cat's eyes had completely lost their sparkle. Its four paws, each with a different shape, were also completely stiff.

"It's dead..."

Pidan hugged me tightly and burst into tears.

I was breathing rapidly.

I remembered those lessons I learned in school: two fingers together, pressed against the old cat's heart, squeezing it repeatedly...
