Chapter 10 White Fox

Chapter 10 White Fox
The monkey didn't say much, and didn't even go inside.

However, his few words had an unexpectedly large impact on me.

So much so that on my first night in this 'new home,' I was still tossing and turning in bed late into the night, unable to fall asleep.

He spoke very succinctly, saying that everything he said at noon was true.

The deliveryman fled in panic, leaving behind his handbag.

Although there wasn't much money in the bag (he specifically explained to me that people in that line of work, 'deliverymen,' only bring back the round-trip fare. This is to prevent 'fellow thieves' from setting up a robbery).

After that night, he was somewhat confused, thinking that he had imagined it.

He had no money in his bag, but he still had to return it; after all, being a "tech worker" wasn't easy. He had added the woman on WeChat, but couldn't contact her afterwards. He couldn't contact the "shop owner," and felt it was unnecessary.

This matter should have been forgotten, but recently, he went to the Second Municipal Hospital to arrange some medicine for someone. Unexpectedly, he saw that 'deliveryman' there again.

However, when they met again, the woman was already a stinking corpse on a four-poster bed.

At this point, the monkey suddenly started talking to me about pathology.

Pale spirochetes, mucopolysaccharidase...

I was completely confused when he suddenly burst out laughing: "I asked an old classmate who works at that hospital. The woman had a sexually transmitted disease, it was in its late stage, and there was no saving her. When she died, more than half of her body was ulcerated, and her eye sockets... her eye sockets were the most severely eroded!"

The monkey said that the woman's appearance when she died was almost exactly the same as what he had seen that night. As for what the woman saw that night, that will never be answered.

……

Time ticked by, but I couldn't fall asleep. My mind and eyelids were filled with all sorts of jumbled thoughts.

Gradually, I started to feel a little confused, and the images in my mind were gradually filled with rows of storefronts with small pink lights inside.

"That's not something you should be thinking about!"

I finally couldn't help but sit up, stared blankly for a moment, slipped on my slippers, took a few steps out of the house, and went to open the back door.

Since it was a temporary stay, I slept in one of the downstairs rooms, which was probably originally the elderly people's room. The house itself is quite old, and the bathroom and kitchen were all built separately in the courtyard.

Actually, I was just feeling very upset. I couldn't tell if I was hungry or needed to pee. The rain was pattering in the yard, and I was standing under the eaves, not knowing whether to run to the toilet or the kitchen.

A cool breeze hit my face, and I shook my head vigorously, clearing my head a bit. I finally figured out what to do next.

I just moved in. Although there are pots and pans in the kitchen, they have been sitting unused for years. There are no ingredients for me to cook, and besides, the gas cylinder is broken and hasn't been replaced yet.

I covered my head with my hands and ran into the toilet as fast as I could. I live alone, so I didn't need to close the door. I just pulled down my pants and peed.

As I swayed from side to side, suddenly, I felt as if a pair of eyes were silently watching me.

I shuddered, and before I could even shake, I pulled up my underwear with one hand, grabbed the door with the other, closed it halfway, leaned back, and glanced sideways into the yard.

When I saw it, I was terrified.

Looking out through the toilet door, and with the light shining from the front house, I could see a white shadow in the corner of the yard!
The white shadow was originally a small mass, but its two bright green eyes were particularly striking.

It seemed to notice me watching it, and it hissed defiantly as it exhaled, and actually started to swell up!
I stood there stunned for a full minute. When I finally came to my senses and was about to close the door in fright, the thing had grown to be more than half a person's height, compared to when I first saw it.

Those glowing green eyes were still staring straight at us. Although the light was slightly dimmed, it seemed even more profound and penetrating to the heart!
"boom!"

I slammed the door shut, leaned against it, and gasped for breath with my head tilted back.

what is that?
cat?
No way, it looked like a cat at first, but then it got so big... How can a cat grow that big?
Green eyes...all white...

dog?
Samoyed? Doesn't seem like it.

I studied veterinary medicine, so I know the relationship between genes and appearance.

Different refractions of light can cause different reflections in the eyes of certain animals, but I am certain that a white fluorescent light tube in a room would not likely reflect that green light into the eyes of any common animal.

"What the hell is that?"

I didn't dare open the door, but just looked into the yard through the crack in the wooden door.

I squinted and looked carefully for a long time before I suddenly realized what was going on.

Although the light was dim due to the rain, it was still possible to see that the white shadow, which had grown to almost the height of a person, had distinct features.

All white, with pointed ears and a pointed snout... it squatted there motionless...

That's definitely not Samoyed!
That's a fox! A big white fox!

The moment this thought popped into my head, I was completely stunned.

This isn't the city center, but there aren't any foxes around here either! And this one was huge! Just at this moment, it was almost taller than me, and it was even sitting down!
"Wow..."

Suddenly a strange scream rang out, startling me so much that I jumped back and almost slipped and twisted my ankle.

It took me a long time to finally control my trembling legs. My eyes slowly rolled around as I quietly grabbed the toilet tank lid with one hand and gripped the doorknob with the other.

He flung open the door and then forcefully swung the heavy water tank lid toward the direction he remembered the white fox was.

With a loud "bang!"
My pores suddenly opened wide, and I turned my face to the side, staring intently out through the half-closed door.

The big fox has disappeared!

In the middle of the yard, there was a patch of white, but it was just a white porcelain water tank lid.

……

The next morning, the first person I received a call from was Liping, who asked me how I slept last night.
I lied and said I slept well. I couldn't very well tell him that there was a fox in the yard in the middle of the night and I hadn't slept all night, could I?

The second caller was Meng Chao. This 'youngster' probably just woken up, and he mumbled on the phone, "Hey, I've been thinking about this all night. You...you're still short of money, aren't you? Um, I still have some in my account, can I transfer some more to you? By the way, did you dream about the lottery draw last night?"

Moved, I said, "I dreamt about it, 123456, plus a 7!"

"Get lost, you bastard!" Meng Chao hung up the phone with a drawn-out tone.

"Bang bang bang..."

There was a knock on the door, so I had to get out of bed, throw on some clothes, walk out of the room, and open the door.

The monkey stared at me through the door frame for a while, its eyes filled with a strange look.

Before I could even speak, he handed me something.

When I saw the packaging box, I was taken aback.

The monkey said, "This is a remote doorbell. I didn't mean for you to install it on the door... There are two buzzers in total. I kept one for myself. You... you put the button in your pocket. If anything happens, you just... press the button."

I sensed his good intentions, but I was also at a loss for words. "Brother Monkey, isn't this... a bit too much?"

To my surprise, the monkey seemed to have been stepped on by its tail, leaping three feet high and yelling at me, "You haven't left the house for three days! I've been watching you every day... If something really happens to you, how... how am I supposed to explain it to Brother Ping?!"
