Chapter 94 Flying Tower
Chapter 94 Flying Tower
Leaving the police station in a daze, Lu Ze was completely disoriented. He had given a statement and the case had been filed, but when or even if the money could be recovered was now unknown.
Perhaps the snow from Lü Hua fell in Fengtian. In the middle of the night, snowflakes began to fall in Fengtian, and each step on the road made a crunching sound.
Many shops along the roadside were still open, but they were all very clean. He looked at his yellow rubber shoes, but didn't dare to look at them. He lowered his head and hurriedly left.
On the street, an elderly woman with gray hair was hurriedly packing up her stall, which sold leather cases and old-fashioned hair clips. It was obvious whether these things would sell.
He didn't step forward to help; he just watched her pack up the leather case and leave. He didn't want to help the old lady because who could help him?
The snow was falling heavily, and soon his head was covered in snowflakes. He walked to the entrance of a hospital, opposite which was an underground pedestrian walkway, and went inside.
The lights inside were dim, and no one walked by anymore. He sat at the corner to shield himself from the cold wind, leaned against the wall, and took out another yellow cotton-padded coat from his tattered snakeskin bag and covered himself with it.
He closed his eyes, curled up into a ball, buried his head in his clothes, warmed them with his body, and sobbed softly inside. He had just come out into the dark and was now at his wit's end; he really didn't know how to go on living.
He was exhausted after a long day. As he cried, sleepiness washed over him. His lower body felt a little cold, but he didn't care anymore. He was so sleepy that he wanted to go to sleep.
"Da Ze. Da Ze"
Half asleep and half awake, Lu Ze heard someone calling him. He opened his eyes halfway and, in the dim light, saw Lu Weiguo, covered in blood, squatting beside him, softly calling Lu Ze's name.
"Don't sleep, you'll freeze to death."
He stared directly at Lu Ze's face, less than ten centimeters away, his stiff tone as rigid as his entire being, devoid of any emotion.
"I'm not going to sleep anymore! I'm getting up!"
Lu Ze pressed himself against the wall, scrambled to his feet, grabbed the bag, and started running. His legs were already numb with cold. After only a few steps, Lu's legs suddenly gave way, and he collapsed to the ground.
"Ah!!! Ah!!! Ah!!!!"
He let out a shrill scream, crawling forward on his hands and knees, looking back in terror. Lu Weiguo didn't move, still squatting there, slowly turning his head, staring straight at Lu Ze.
Only after Lu Ze had scrambled off the pedestrian crossing did he wave goodbye to Lu Ze and slowly walk away in the opposite direction.
The snow continued to fall, and even seemed to be getting heavier. When the sanitation workers on the roadside saw Lu Ze come out of the underpass and fall directly into the snow, they pointed and whispered about him. Finally, an old sanitation worker, seeing him buried in the snow, couldn't bear it any longer and went over to gently pat Lu Ze on the shoulder.
"Young man"
"Don't come any closer! Don't come any closer! I'm not sleeping! I'm not sleeping! Don't come any closer!"
The old man realized the boy was crazy. He sighed. He couldn't help him and didn't dare touch Lu Ze again, afraid that Lu Ze would go crazy and hurt him. He got up, picked up a half-bag of disposable paper cups he found in the trash can, took one out, and then poured a cup of hot water from his own thermos and placed it next to Lu Ze.
"Drink some hot water to warm yourself up."
Hearing the footsteps fade away, Lu Ze poked his head out of the snowdrift, looked at the still steaming paper cup on the ground, picked it up with trembling hands. The water was still very hot, but Lu Ze's hands were icy cold, so he didn't feel anything when it spilled on his hands.
He picked up his water glass and took a sip, feeling much warmer. He looked around; it was still dark, but the streetlights were on. An old man picked up a snow shovel and continued working. The reflective vest he wore made the old man appear even brighter in Lu Ze's eyes.
He dared not return to the sidewalk, so he had to stay at the entrance of the hospital across the street. There were already quite a few people queuing there, and Lu Ze was not conspicuous. He waited until dawn, and around 8 a.m., he carried his luggage out again.
He needs a job to support himself; he wants to survive and doesn't want to freeze to death on the street.
He wandered around aimlessly, noticing signs for hiring helpers and waiters at nearby restaurants. Lu Ze went in and asked, but none of them wanted him. They said it politely, "We don't need anyone here," but Lu Ze knew they just didn't want him.
He passed by a small mobile phone store with a blackboard advertising temporary jobs. On a whim, he asked the owner, "Do you hire anyone here?"
"Hiring? No, we're not hiring. Oh, you mean you're looking for part-time work? There's a phone number listed here, just call yourself."
"I don't have a cell phone."
"I have a landline here, you can call yourself."
Public telephones have been obsolete for a long time, so much so that the landline in this business hall was covered in a layer of dust. After Lu Ze made the call, he was told to go to the door of a store, and then he hung up.
Lu Ze still had a few yuan left over from selling the train tickets. After giving it to the shopkeeper, he asked around and finally found the shop located in the old-fashioned storefront.
"You're here to work, right? Come on, follow me."
Before Lu Ze knew what was going to happen, a man led him out and into a nearby old-style residential area. The man then handed Lu Ze a bag he was carrying.
"Look closely, this little sign, slap it on the door, from the first floor to the top floor, one for each store, three cents each. If you get tired and don't want to work anymore, come back to the store and settle accounts with me. I have ways to check, so don't try to fool me, okay? Can you do it?"
"Capable, capable."
The man handed him the bag and turned to leave. Lu Ze took out a stack of small posters, which were from Lock King Locksmith. He clumsily tore off the adhesive backing and stuck them on a door. Then he walked up to the second floor and continued sticking them on.
Building construction is a very tiring job, especially for losing weight. Lu Ze was carrying luggage, and he was sweating profusely after just one building. But with six points per floor and six floors in total, how much money could he earn? He could only keep going.
He was covered in sweat, his legs were so weak that he was about to kneel down with every step, so he had to give up, go to the boss to settle his bill, and receive his first paycheck, fifty-three yuan and fifty cents.
With shaky legs, Lu Ze arrived at a small restaurant on the street and ate a bite. Having not eaten all day, he almost ate the bowl. After finishing, he wandered aimlessly through the streets.
When he returned to the hospital, the security guards kicked him out. They only said it once before Lu Ze left. His remaining pride prevented him from waiting for the security guards to scold him, so he shamelessly left.
However, he soon found a more suitable place than the hospital: an ATM.
After pushing open the door, Lu Ze found that it was much warmer inside than outside. Even if he lay on the ground, it wouldn't be too cold. There was also an air conditioner blowing warm air inside, which made Lu Ze particularly happy.
He would sit inside, and when someone came to collect money, he would leave the room and wait outside for a while. After the person left, he would go back inside to rest.
This was naturally quite a hassle. Lu Ze counted the forty-odd yuan he had left and smiled contentedly.
Today I passed by an urban village where there were bungalows for rent. The sign said it was 400 yuan a month. If he works hard for another ten days, he will have enough money to rent a house.
He now has a home.
With a smile, he was smarter this time. He put the money in his pocket, turned to his side, and lay down so that no one could steal his money.
The bank was brightly lit, but the exhausted Lu Ze was still fast asleep and didn't notice that someone had quietly entered the bank, looked down at Lu Ze, and stared at him for a long time.
