Chapter 187: Night ends and dawn begins
Chapter 187: Night ends and dawn begins
The long night is about to pass—the eastern sky is beginning to lighten.
After the ordeal, Thales leaned weakly against a collapsed low wall, trying to avoid the sparse snowfall. He lazily looked at the sky, his mind filled with scenes from that wonderful night.
Exhaustion, fatigue, and hunger tormented his body and mind simultaneously; it seemed that every cell in his body was protesting against his master's excessive labor.
The chilly wind around him, coupled with the uncomfortable pebbles under his bottom, gave him an absurd sense of familiarity.
This reminded Thales of his days making a living in the fraternity: the days of outsmarting Quaid, the wild dogs, the 'fat sheep,' and the kids from the other houses.
He couldn't help but chuckle.
Tired and sleepy, Thales yawned unceremoniously, his eyelids drooping. He turned his head groggily and looked at the little rascal who was also leaning against the low wall.
The disheveled little girl, seemingly lost in thought, carefully held her black-rimmed glasses, looking anxious and uncertain.
He couldn't help but frown.
"Don't worry about it, just put it on."
Thales couldn't help but lazily say, "If she really minded, she would have swallowed you whole just now."
Why would I snort at you?
The little rascal hesitated and turned his head, looking like he was about to cry, and looked at Thales with a wronged expression.
She squinted her swollen red eyes, her face was filthy, and her platinum blonde hair was patchy with black and white hair.
Thales found it amusing.
The little rascal sniffed, then pouted and weakly said, "But...but..."
Thales sighed.
While the little rascal was still saying "but" with a worried look on his face, Thales suddenly reached out and snatched the glasses from the girl's hand without saying a word.
"Ah! Wait a minute," the little rascal exclaimed, slightly startled. She turned to Thales and held out her hand. "Be careful not to fall..."
However, before the little rascal could react, Thales opened his glasses and shoved them onto the girl's head.
The little rascal's face trembled slightly in Thales's hand, and she only reacted with an "Ah!" after Thales's fingers brushed across her earlobe and fixed the glasses in place.
The little rascal's narrowed eyes relaxed again behind his black-rimmed glasses.
She stared blankly at Thales, not even reacting when he ruffled her messy hair like he was scratching a kitten.
“Alright,” Thales let out a sigh of relief and raised an eyebrow. “If that lady really comes after you for her old glasses, just tell her—that wicked Thales Star forced you to do it.”
The little rascal blinked, pouted, and tried to speak several times, but in the end he gave up and looked at Thales with a helpless expression.
Thales burst out laughing.
A few seconds later, the sly little boy, who was looking at Thales with a bewildered expression, was also caught up in the atmosphere and couldn't help but curl up the corners of his mouth: "She might go to the stars to find you..."
Of course—Thales chuckled to himself, thinking to himself: If the Sky Queen really came back to find him, that would be perfect.
The dragon's last words haunted him.
Upon thinking of this, Thales' face immediately darkened.
A dragon name, is it?
Dragon language.
He sighed and closed his eyes.
Old Man Kessel...
What did you do when you were young and ignorant?
The little rascal sensed his emotions. She blinked and, mimicking Thales's actions, reached out and grasped his wrist.
"It's alright..." the little rascal tried his best to appear serious: "It's all in the past."
Thales opened his eyes.
He suppressed his worries and gave her a reassuring smile.
The prince leaned back and looked up at the majestic statue of Nekaru holding a gun and looking down on the Sky Cliff not far away.
But this time, looking at this legendary hero who danced with dragons, Thales couldn't help but curl his lip, showing no seriousness whatsoever.
Dragon Knight.
Ha ha.
Just then, the sound of footsteps suddenly came from afar.
"quick!"
"Right there!"
Thales let out a breath amidst the ruins, and with a weary smile, he gave the somewhat frightened little rascal a smile: "They're here."
However, he was secretly having a headache.
Oops.
How can this night be explained?
The sky is bright.
A group of people holding inextinguishable lamps and torches appeared before us.
Thales lay dejectedly in the ruins when he saw a figure in military uniform, sword at his side, aged yet still vigorous, approaching them, surrounded by a dozen elite soldiers in gray cloaks, masked and armored.
"It seems our star guests are having a very pleasant time?"
Exter and the ruler of Dragonsreach, the majestic King Nunn VII, frowned as he looked at the two disheveled children before him, his voice aged: "And you brought my granddaughter with you?"
Thales took a deep breath and struggled to his feet—the little rascal had already stood up nervously the moment before—patted the dust and frost off his body, and while thinking quickly, said nonchalantly, "Yes, Dragon City provided us with a lot of fun tonight."
King Nuen's expression changed, a playful look on his face: "Tales Star...don't you have anything to explain to me?"
The guards around him stood solemnly and motionless behind the king.
Thales's mind raced.
He glanced at the sly girl behind him. The girl seemed to have an insurmountable fear of King Nuen. She trembled at the sight of him and tried her best to shrink herself away, attempting to avoid the king's gaze.
You have to find a reasonable reason.
“A madman kidnapped us,” Thales rubbed his head and sighed in anguish, “and then…you see what he did.”
King Nunn surveyed the devastation in the Shield Zone, his aged face etched with an unyielding gloom in the dim firelight.
He looked at Thales again, the gloom and weariness in his eyes making the latter feel suffocated: "Why? Why did the calamity kidnap you?"
Thales looked utterly miserable and sighed helplessly and angrily.
“We had a feud before we arrived in Exter… with a vampire named Serena from the Corleone family,” Thales raised his head, betraying the ambitious, cunning, and wicked woman to the old king without hesitation: “The calamities seem to be using her for something… perhaps they hate our two countries, and they hate the royal family as well.”
"Bloodlines?"
King Nuen exhaled deeply, gave a light sneer, and stared at him: "I will have the secret chamber investigate."
Faced with the king's meaningful gaze, Thales gave a harmless but weary smile.
King Nuen seemed to finally notice their disheveled appearance, raising an eyebrow: "Looks like you guys had a good time."
The little rascal shrank back in fear.
Thales calmly spread his hands: "As you can see."
"Yes, not every day we see the Hydra rampaging through Dragon Sky City, nor every day we see the Sky Queen returning to the North."
The old king shook his head with a profound expression.
Thales frowned slightly, looking somewhat worried.
Hopefully, I can slip back to the stars before they find anything.
King Nuen VII waved his hand, and a nobleman who looked like a bureaucrat stepped forward. King Nuen whispered something in his ear, and the nobleman nodded while hurriedly writing in a handwritten copy.
The messenger departed, while the old king, accompanied by his guards with white blades, continued walking forward through the empty streets.
Thales and Little Sly followed, escorted by the White Blade Guard.
“Speaking of which, Your Majesty Nunn,” Thales said, taking a water bag from a grim-faced guard, deliberately changing the subject, “what are the losses in Dragonsreach?”
As soon as he finished speaking, he saw King Nuen's fist clench slightly.
"you saw it."
“Look at this scene, it’s like it’s been plowed by war,” the old king said, his aged voice revealing weariness and sorrow: “a son of a bitch’s calamity.”
Thales tilted his head and blinked.
“I have just lost the entire Shield District,” King Nunn said, his brow furrowed as he stepped over a collapsed roof beam, surveying the damage with a grim expression. “Less than thirty percent of the people evacuated from here… As for the other districts, they were not greatly affected…”
Thales breathed a sigh of relief: "That's good."
At least, his and Black Sword's actions were timely.
"That's good...that's good?"
The old king murmured, repeating Thales' words.
He looked at the severed leg protruding from under the rubble, sighed, and calmly looked at Thales.
The dozen or so elite guards surrounding the king looked grim.
The prince, who was drinking water, choked.
The sly little brat next to him lowered his head as low as he could, almost as if he wanted to burrow into the ground.
As Thales coughed incessantly, King Nunn took a deep breath and surveyed the surrounding ruins: "You know, to deal with that calamity, we cannot mobilize the army..."
The old king's eyelids drooped slightly, his aged face showing signs of exhaustion and weakness. His tone was flat and emotionless, yet it sent chills down one's spine for no apparent reason: "The only option is for the White Blade Guards to be equipped with anti-magic gear and divided into small teams to intercept that monster. Many teams have yet to report back—they have probably all suffered heavy losses."
The guards unconsciously quickened their breathing.
“Nikolai and Griveo went to fight the enemy alone with their weapons, and as a result, the disaster disappeared, but there has been no news of them since…”
Thales stared wide-eyed as a soldier beside him ruthlessly snatched the water bag back.
King Nuen kicked aside a plank, and his plain yet sorrowful words continued.
"Many people saw the multi-headed snake, and panic spread. The entire Dragon Sky City was in chaos. We had to evacuate neighboring areas, such as the Armor District. The evacuated residents crowded other districts to the point of being unbearable."
“We even had to open the city gates to evacuate the crowds; there was chaos in the middle of the night,” the old man’s breathing grew heavier. “The patrols were too busy just suppressing the looters taking advantage of the chaos…”
"If the Sky Queen hadn't suddenly appeared and calmed some people down, I probably would have become the first king in Exter's history to conscript an army to suppress the civilians in the capital."
King Nuen's face was calm, his eyes were sorrowful, and his tone was heavy.
"The officials were in a state of utter chaos, dealing with countless questions from nobles and vassals, lest some hot-headed fellow pull together a group of people from inside or outside the city to deliver meat to the disaster..."
King Nuen sighed, "Thanks to the fact that a large number of people got drunk at last night's banquet, otherwise they would have been even busier."
"And I still have four grand dukes, cowering in Valhalla, waiting to see them make a fool of themselves by jointly electing a king."
At this point, King Nuen gave an ugly laugh, his wrinkles deepening: "Yes, and there's also a prince from an enemy country who was taking my granddaughter for a stroll in the streets at midnight."
Thales shrugged awkwardly: "I'm sorry too."
"And then there are all these miscellaneous follow-up arrangements..."
King Nuen ignored his words, instead shaking his head with a complicated expression and letting out a long sigh: "Can you imagine?"
A deathly sorrow appeared in the king's eyes.
“Countless dead, shattered families, wounded soldiers needing medical treatment, a city destroyed in an instant, property lost without cause, and yet another expenditure out of thin air…”
"The chaotic order urgently needs to be restored; panicked and angry crowds, rumors spreading in the streets and alleys, and the ignorant masses making accusations and blame behind their backs..."
"The nobles offering feigned condolences and their tax exemption requests, ostensibly for relief but actually for self-enrichment; the inevitable doubts and wavering of the vassals and the army; the petty actions of other grand dukes taking advantage of the situation; the envoys sent by the temple and various countries to investigate; and the restless foreign spies..."
"Caravans will surely be deterred for at least a month upon hearing the news, and prices are set to rise again, along with a sharp decline in labor, which will undoubtedly severely impact next year's grain production..."
With each word spoken, King Nuen's face grew paler.
Thales's heart also felt heavy.
"And the bitter cold is coming again..." the old king sighed in disappointment, "Ever since Morar's assassination... this year will be another difficult winter..."
Thales looked at King Nunn's face and his heart sank.
He looked around at the ruins, his gaze occasionally drifting to the exposed corpses.
Especially when you think about how the two magic users fought so fiercely because of you, which led to all this...
"I'm very sorry."
Thales said dejectedly, his words filled with deep sorrow.
King Nuen looked at him silently, without saying a word.
At that moment, Thales felt that Nunn VII’s face was filled with deep sorrow and exhaustion.
A few seconds later, the old king took a deep breath.
"you know……"
“Sometimes, I really admire you stars,” the king said, his words tinged with deep helplessness and powerlessness.
“At least you have a ‘wise ruler’.”
Thales was taken aback, and looked up, puzzled: "Huh?"
A wise ruler?
Like Kessel?
Thales rolled his eyes, his face clearly showing his confusion.
But King Nuen simply shook his head indifferently and scoffed, "Never mind."
“Martial law will continue for a while longer…some secrets cannot be revealed,” he said calmly. “Until then, let’s take a look at the mess this disaster has left us with.”
King Nunn continued walking forward in a low mood, while the bewildered Thales could only scratch his head and follow behind, completely confused.
The lights and fires illuminated everything along the way: countless ruins and countless corpses, which made the group's mood even heavier.
The ruins left by the multi-headed serpent's rampage, the holes drilled by its tentacles, the people who died from suffocation—everywhere one looked was a tragedy.
"These sons of bitches..."
King Nuen's expression remained unchanged, and his words were still calm.
Just like what had happened before, it did not shake his mood at all.
"Disaster..."
However, Thales detected a deep-seated hatred in his words:
"The final battle, hehe, the final battle..."
King Nuen gave a helpless smile and slowly said, "Why didn't you take them..."
"Kill them all."
Thales felt a chill run down his spine.
King Nuen suddenly stopped in his tracks: "Is this the place where the Sky Queen descended?"
They were standing on the edge of a wide pit, which was distinctly different from the rest of the area.
Thales frowned slightly as he looked at the crater, which was clearly made by a giant claw. "Yes."
The little rascal blinked and touched his glasses with some concern.
King Nuen's expression shifted: "She spoke to you?"
Thales took a deep breath, involuntarily recalling the Sky Queen's words: "Yes, she said..."
"Wait," the old king interrupted Thales, giving the little rascal a sharp look that terrified him, "we'll talk about it when we get back."
King Nuen put his hands behind his back, looked up at the high sky, and against the slightly bright sky, gazed up at the statue of Nekaru on the Sky Cliff, his expression complicated.
"Six hundred years have passed," a faint sorrow appeared on King Nunn's face, "and that dragon has finally descended upon the mortal world once more when disaster struck."
Thales couldn't help but notice that the old king referred to the Sky Queen as "that dragon" rather than with the honorific "Your Majesty Chlores."
The old king suddenly laughed.
"you know……"
“Even three hundred years ago, when Dragonsreach was suffering heavy casualties and was on the verge of collapse under the Nightwing King’s Eastern Allied Forces, with its soldiers and supplies exhausted and even the ‘King of Wrath’ dying a heroic death,” Nun VII lowered his head and stared straight at Thales, “that dragon did not appear.”
"It's as if this isn't the country she and her lover built together." After a night of chaos, Thales, whose mind was a bit foggy, stared wide-eyed, completely bewildered.
King Nuen raised his head, his tone complex:
"What do Exter and Dragon City mean to her? What does her husband, Nekaru, mean to her?"
"What does this final battle mean?"
"And we, the Exter people, consider ourselves children of the North Wind and the dragon... Hmph, children of the dragon?"
King Nuen chuckled, his laughter filled with sarcasm:
"really?"
Thales noticed that when King Nunn was expressing his feelings, the little rascal's eyes flickered, as if he had something to say.
But then she seemed to realize something, her face showing fear, and she finally lowered her head again.
“We Stars also call ourselves the successors of the Empire, don’t we?” Thales couldn’t help but say, “But we are ultimately not the Empire.”
King Nunn suddenly lowered his head, his gaze fixed on Thales.
The oppressive feeling emanating from those piercing eyes made the second prince somewhat uncomfortable.
After a long pause, the old king glanced at the sly little fellow and said calmly:
"You protected her, didn't you? You protected my granddaughter in that kind of danger?"
Thales and the little rascal were both startled, and the latter subconsciously leaned closer to Thales.
“I can tell,” King Nunn said, his expression unchanged as he stared intently at the little rascal, making her even more nervous. “The way she looks at you is different now.”
"Um, well," Thales scratched his head, feeling the little rascal hiding behind him, and said somewhat awkwardly, "People should always help each other."
King Nuen stared at him for a full three seconds without saying a word.
Three seconds later, King Nuen gave a meaningful look and said with a hint of amusement, "You know, I reconsidered your words later."
Thales paused suddenly as he touched his head.
He was a little surprised.
how?
“We are not born with the habit of intrigue and shrewd calculations,” King Nunn said calmly, his words revealing his age and composure. “Perhaps, the best thing we can rely on for the storms that Walton is about to face is not the shrewd nobles who weigh the pros and cons, fight for power, and carefully advance and retreat, nor their back-and-forth, short-sighted considerations, nor the power games in which chips are moved back and forth.”
The king raised his head and looked at the statue above him: "It is the glory that once shone in the heroes, the glory that we have lost for too long."
Thales glanced at the guards around him with some doubt, but they merely scanned their surroundings warily and waited quietly for the king.
“A true hero—like Nekaru,” King Nunn stared at the statue of the Dragon Rider King and sighed, “maybe he truly possesses the brilliance that makes people obey without hesitation, follow willingly, die without complaint, and sacrifice themselves without regret.”
“Perhaps it was that dazzling brilliance that established Exter, that brilliance that made even dragons willing to follow,” King Nunn’s face then darkened, “and that made dragons disdain their descendants who flowed with his blood, and retreat from the world.”
Thales' heart skipped a beat, and he blurted out, "A king is not respected for his bloodline."
The scar on his chest was throbbing again.
King Nuen moved slightly and gave him a deep and subtle smile.
“I have said that you have a ‘wise ruler’,” he said calmly.
Thales frowned again.
But the next moment, a sense of irritation rose in his heart.
"call out--"
In the dim light of dawn, Thales subconsciously looked up.
The king's guards were much faster than Thales; having been through countless battles, they instinctively sensed something and had already looked up in unison.
It seemed as if something was falling from the cliff in the sky.
A faint whistling sound could be heard.
The king frowned.
"What is that?" King Nuen squinted.
Thales's gaze immediately sharpened.
The sins of the River of Hell surged into his eyes like a tidal wave.
What fell from the cliff in the sky was a gray thing.
Thales's gaze followed it as it plummeted vertically, watching it fall to a point twenty meters above the ground.
"Like a... gray rock?" Thales asked, puzzled.
The battle just now was so intense that it shook down the rock layers of Sky Cliff.
Suddenly, the falling gray figure paused in mid-air.
The next moment, the gray shadow, which was plummeting straight down the cliff, suddenly changed course and shot straight toward them!
Thales felt a chill run down his spine and instinctively took a step back.
"No!"
One of the guards, wielding a melee weapon, immediately went on alert, drawing his sword in a flash and shouting angrily, "That's not a rock! Warning—"
But the gray shadow arrived in an instant—it flew above them!
Thales looked up in shock and, by the light of the fire in the guards' hands, saw the gray shadow that had shot towards him in an instant.
That's a person.
A man who was covered from head to toe in a gray bodysuit, with even his forehead tightly bound with a gray cloth.
Only a pair of narrow eyes were visible, gleaming coldly in Thales's vision.
The man leaped into the air above them and released the rope he was holding.
It swung towards them.
Thales shuddered.
That's... the climbing zipline left behind by Black Sword!
This man actually used it for...
The man in gray stood with his hands behind his back in mid-air.
"alert!"
The elite guards of the White Blade Guard roared and reacted quickly to surround the king and the two children.
"Don't panic!" King Nuen's voice rang out clearly: "Send the signal..."
But before he could finish speaking, the man in the air suddenly stretched out his arms!
Two beams of light shot towards the guards below.
Thales was pushed back a step by a warrior.
"call out!"
Thales instantly felt a cool sensation on his head as countless warm liquids sprayed onto his face.
The little rascal cried out in surprise.
Thales trembled, tasting the metallic saltiness in his mouth, as he watched the warrior fall beside him, a short knife embedded in his neck.
Blood was everywhere, and he died with his eyes wide open in disbelief.
"Clang!"
The warrior at the forefront swung his sword to deflect another beam of light, followed by the sharp clang of blades clashing.
The next second, the man in gray landed at an incredible speed.
"Thump—Crack!"
An assassin descended from the sky and landed on a soldier, knocking him to the ground with a terrible cracking sound of his ribs breaking!
The assassin seemed completely unaffected by the impact of the landing; he suddenly looked up.
A pair of narrow, cold eyes stared intently at Thales.
Thales felt a chill run down his spine, and his scalp tingled.
The target... is me?
The assassin appeared a meter away in the next instant, rushing towards the two warriors blocking Thales's path.
"Stop him!"
King Nuen, who was tightly surrounded, roared, "Protect him!"
At his command, the White Blade Guards surrounded the assassin without hesitation, their three streamlined, white-handled scimitars slicing towards his abdomen, throat, and thigh!
But the man suddenly turned and, just as the three blades were about to graz him, leaped into the air with a narrow escape.
With a flick of his head, a pull in his stomach, and a tuck in of his legs, he used the most incredible agility to perform a front flip, barely avoiding the blades of the three men.
Thales suddenly realized: he felt like he had seen this movement technique somewhere before.
But nothing he had ever seen... was so swift, so incredibly fast, and so unbelievable!
The man who had passed the three landed steadily, and with a flick of his wrists, two short knives appeared in his hands.
The assassin's twin blades crossed in an instant, slicing past the last warrior blocking Thales's path.
Blood spurted out.
The little rascal was so frightened he stood there dumbfounded.
Thales gasped. He had no time to react and could only watch as the assassin's dagger came hurtling towards him.
The blade is getting closer and closer.
The sin of the River of Hell slowed down his sense of time.
But he couldn't find any chance to escape.
That blade—it was incredibly fast.
"clang!"
The assassin's blade finally stopped just before Thales's nose.
The sins of the River of Hell have faded, and time has returned to normal.
Thales was still in shock, his heart pounding.
The languid feeling of surviving the ordeal was suddenly jolted awake by a cold sweat!
But to the assassin's surprise, his blade could not advance an inch—the warrior who had just been swept past by his deadly twin blades had not been killed by the assassin.
The melee guard, holding a single sword and a shield, used his shoulder and arm to block the assassin's twin blades, holding him back firmly!
Not allowing the assassin's blade to advance an inch.
Thales jolted and quickly rolled to the side in an unseemly manner to avoid the blade.
"Don't underestimate him..." Enduring the pain of his wounds, the melee guard in front of Thales pushed hard and roared, "...Dragon Guard!"
The assassin was pushed back two steps, and the three guards behind him, with their swords drawn, worked in perfect coordination and calmly drew their blades!
"Clang!" "Ding!" "Swish!"
The assassin, losing his balance, spun around and skillfully parried the three blows with difficulty.
But he was unsteady on his feet and was eventually struck in the left arm by a fourth soldier who arrived at the scene.
"laugh!"
The assassin's blood splattered.
"Clang!"
He could no longer hold the knife steady in his left hand, and the blade fell to the ground with a crisp metallic sound.
The warrior's white-handled sword slashed out, drawing another spray of blood from the assassin's shoulder.
"Clang!"
The assassin's dangling right-hand blade fell to the ground. He raised his head and gave Thales one last look.
The coldness and lifelessness in his eyes sent chills down the latter's spine.
The assassin, having lost his twin blades, rolled away from Thales, who was already heavily surrounded by the quick-reacting melee guards.
Thales gasped for breath, trembling, as he looked at the assassin shivering on the ground, clutching his wound.
so close.
so close!
Who is he?
More and more guards with melee weapons rushed toward the unarmed assassins.
"Keep them alive!" King Nunn pressed Thales's shoulder from behind, comforting the trembling man. The king's majestic voice rang out steadily: "Find out who's behind this!"
But at that moment, the two short knives on the ground suddenly "jumped" up on their own!
It's as if it has a life of its own.
In that instant, a senior guard with a melee weapon seemed to recognize the assassin, and his expression immediately changed.
"Watch out!" the guard roared.
Almost simultaneously, the assassin rose and turned back, spraying blood as he passed three people and broke through the encirclement!
With its incredible speed, cunning angles, and agile movements, the White Blade Guards blocking its path had no chance to intercept it.
The guards, recognizing the enemy, roared furiously, leading their comrades towards the assassin: "He is 'Flying Locust Blade'—"
One of the two swords on the ground mysteriously bounced back into the assassin's hand.
The other knife was thrown into the darkness and disappeared without a trace.
The assassin's single-edged sword attacks were relentless, instantly slicing through a guard's throat.
The guard's words only reached his ears at this moment:
"—Baannet Surreyton!"
The next moment, despite being slashed in the shoulder by the second guard, the assassin gritted his teeth and twisted his body in a terrifying arc, instantly bypassing the obstacle!
All the guards with melee weapons, including Thales, were shocked!
However, the assassin had already broken through the encirclement and fled far away, disappearing into the darkness and ruins.
Thales stood there, staring blankly at the assassin's departing figure.
Baannet Sarityton?
Could it be that……
"Aaaaaah!" The little rascal's heart-wrenching screams suddenly rang out!
Thales was taken aback and quickly looked at her.
But before he could turn his head, Thales felt his foot being lightly touched.
Thales was jolted.
He slowly lowered his head.
The prince's eyes widened suddenly.
A round, spherical object rolled down to his feet, wobbling slightly.
Thales's breath caught in his throat.
A few seconds passed.
Amidst the little rascal's screams, Thales stood there, stunned, letting the blood on the ground soak through his shoes, his mind blank.
He breathed in a daze, his head still bowed, silently gazing at the long-dead head of Noon Walton VII, the co-ruling king who had ruled Exter for thirty years.
An incredulous look of surprise froze on the king's face.
The other knife, plunged into the darkness and not returned to the assassin's hand, fell to the ground along with the king's head, trembling slightly.
A dozen or so guards, their voices filled with pain, regret, anger, and resentment, roared out, all uttering the same word:
"Do not--"
The first ray of hazy sunlight appeared in the east.
The night is over.
The day will dawn.
